This year’s Independence Day celebration in the United States has outdone and will continue to outdo anything this country has seen in past summers. Independence is that important, and our first 250 years of it are worth noting in the most celebratory way possible.
Yes, independence is great when it comes to governments, kings and countries. I’m grateful for my national independence—for liberty and safety.
But I’m also grateful for those upon whom I depend, like my husband, family, and friends. I’m thankful that I can depend upon law enforcement and first responders if I get in a storm.
However, I’m most grateful that I can depend upon God for His mercy and forgiveness.
Jesus said we’d have trouble in this life—broken bones, hearts, and hangups. But He encouraged us to not be discouraged because He has overcome everything there is to overcome. I’m incredibly dependent upon Him for that.
We have much to be thankful for in this nation, and I pray that we don’t become so accustomed to it that we take it for granted. Let’s be sure to thank our God and the men and women at home and abroad upon whom we depend to keep our country, our homes, and ourselves safe and free.
I have told you all this so that
you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have
many trials and sorrows.
But take heart, because
I have overcome the world.
