The back door opens and an excited voice calls, “Honey?”
It’s my husband.
Sometimes I’m in my office, sometimes in the kitchen, but regardless of where I am, he wants to talk to me, share the moment with me.
He wants to interact with me because He loves me.
So does God.
Too often however, my interaction with God is one-sided because I do all the talking.
What if God has something He wants to share with me? I have a personal relationship with Him, but am I listening?
Or am I too busy?
The Bible mentions several people God called, but the following six all responded in the same way.
Abraham
Jacob
Moses
Samuel
Isaiah
Ananias
These six people all gave the same answer:
“Here I am.”
Of course God knows where we are. Of course He can speak loudly and get our attention. But He wants intimacy. He wants participation. He wants us to love Him in return.
Has God been calling you lately? Have you felt that tug on your heart, heard that whisper in the night?
Next time, say, “Here I am.” And listen.

She turned off the engine and sat in deafening silence. No chickens scratched in the yard. No dogs barked. No horses looked curiously from the corral.
Grasping one last lingering thread of hope, she got out and brushed dust from her sleeves and skirt. She patted her hair and put on a cheerful face, though she felt anything but. The front door yawned, and she poked her head inside.
“Aunt Bertie? Uncle Ernest?”
A chill crawled her neck with spidery speed, and rather than enter, she walked around to the back, where a large kitchen garden lay bare other than for a corner patch of rhubarb. Nibbled to the ground by what—deer? Her throat tightened and her mouth went dry.
A back screen door also stood ajar, its spring unhooked from the frame. As she mounted the steps, scurrying noises came from beyond the wooden door, also open.
“Aunt Bertie?” Her pulse quickened. “Uncle Ernest?”
A dreadful mix of fear and curiosity drew her into the kitchen, through a dining room and parlor, and upstairs to a large bedroom. Again she called her aunt and uncle’s names, but the forsaken furniture and sagging curtains pushed her down the stairs and through the front door, heart racing.
“Lord—where are they? What happened?” She pressed her hands against her cheeks, sticky with road dust, tears, and unanswered questions. ~Hope Is Built
