Bigger, better, newer, faster
. . . is not always good for me.
Sometimes more is too much.
Society conditions us to constantly leverage up and increase. Advertisers insist that I need their bigger, better, newer, faster product, as if these are enviable qualities.
But I don’t need a bigger TV, a better app, a faster computer, or a newer car just because they’re bigger, better, newer, and faster.
Scripture teaches us to use moderation in all things, and with good reason. Too much wine can ruin the party and the person, not to mention their reputation.
Too much salt bites the palate and spoils the food.
Too much water rots the roots of most flowers and vegetable gardens.
The same goes for me.
I don’t need to “super-size me” with extra soda, fries, and a double-double.
Last week an interesting article reminded me of an age-old concept: what we feed grows. I immediately thought of the “super-size” problem, but feeding isn’t limited to food. We feed things like …
Anger and doubt.
I don’t need those things growing in my life.
I’d rather feed more important things like …
Faith and generosity.
I could pray more, read the Bible more.
Worship more, share more.
If what we feed grows, let’s focus on feeding our spirits and attitudes rather than our desires, and egos.
